U.S. Department of Energy

Both a goal and a vision of the Office of Legacy Management’s (LM) Strategic Plan is to return Department of Energy (DOE) legacy real property to the most practical and beneficial use consistent with the Department’s mission requirements. LM considers environmentally-sound future land uses for its properties under its custody, directing a significant effort to maintaining healthy land and evaluating possible land reuse options. Where possible, LM makes excess lands and facilities available for government, public, and private use consistent with the tenets of sustainability and good land management practices.

LM is actively working with local communities to find institutional, industrial, and commercial reuses for former nuclear weapons manufacturing facilities. The following are examples of DOE facilities and plants that once supported national defense production programs sites that now support new commercial businesses, industrial plants, and institutional facilities.
