Seymour, Connecticut, Site
FUSRAP Site

Seymour Map

Background—The Seymour, Connecticut, Site was remediated under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). FUSRAP was established in 1974 to remediate sites where radioactive contamination remained from Manhattan Project and early U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) operations.

History—Research and development of a natural uranium metal extrusion process was performed at the Seymour Site for AEC from 1962 to 1964. Operations resulted in contamination of interior surfaces of one building and two soil areas.

DOE designated the site for remediation under FUSRAP in 1985 and conducted remediation in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, DOE certified that the site complied with applicable cleanup criteria and released the property for unrestricted use.

Final Conditions—DOE applied supplemental limits to inaccessible uranium contamination that was grouted in place in a drain system beneath the building. There are no institutional controls, permits, or agreements in effect at the site. DOE will determine if waste management is required for the supplemental limits material. Office of Legacy Management activities currently consist of managing site records and responding to stakeholder inquiries.
