Long-Term Surveillance and Maintenance
of Remediated FUSRAP Sites

The DOE Office of Legacy Management established long-term surveillance and maintenance (LTSM) requirements for remediated FUSRAP sites. DOE evaluates the final site conditions of a remediated site on the basis of risk for different future uses. DOE then confirms that LTSM requirements will maintain protectiveness.

Most FUSRAP sites are remediated to conditions that pose no risk to human health and the environment under any future use scenario. With regulator concurrence, these sites are released for unrestricted use. No ongoing surveillance is required and DOE Legacy Management responsibilities consist of preserving site records and responding to requests for information.

At certain sites, some contaminated material may be left in place. For example, site ground water may still have residual contamination or contamination may be left in inaccessible soils, such as beneath roadways or railroad tracks. For these sites, LTSM requirements might consist of environmental monitoring, inspections, or active management of institutional controls. These requirements are established in a LTSM plan.
