Monitoring Activities

The environmental monitoring programs at the site were designed to protect the public health and the environment, and to demonstrate compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

Air – An air-monitoring network continuously operated from 1986 through 2000 to measure levels of gamma radiation, radioactive dust particles, and radon gas. Monitors were operated at the fence line, and at other critical locations in the vicinity to measure potential public exposure. The levels of these contaminants were well below regulatory limits, and in all cases at the critical locations, indistinguishable from background.

Surface Water - Storm water runoff and water treatment plant releases, were monitored in accordance with our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. Various nearby streams, ponds, and lakes were also monitored to ensure that discharges from the site did not adversely impact public health and safety.

Groundwater - An extensive network of monitoring wells was used to monitor groundwater at the site and nearby springs. The results were used to assess environmental impacts and evaluate the effectiveness of the cleanup process. The groundwater is the only media that continues to be monitored as part of long term monitoring activities.
