Stewardship
Stewardship is defined as "acceptance of the responsibility and implementation of the activities necessary to maintain long-term protection of human health and the environment from hazards posed by residual radioactive and chemically hazardous materials." The U.S. Department of Energy, together with its partners in the federal, state and local government, as well as the local community, have developed stewardship plans to monitor the disposal cell and groundwater. Institutional controls, such as real estate instruments, will restrict land and groundwater use for the foreseeable future. This Interpretive Center is an integral component of stewardship, providing educational and research opportunities to future generations. |
