Environmental Monitoring

Environmental Monitoring
6860-D82

Description
The Environmental Monitoring program includes the collection of groundwater, surface water, sediment, and air samples to assess the impact of Fernald’s remediation activities on the surrounding environment. The data are used to evaluate changes in environmental conditions and to document that any contaminant releases attributable to Fernald's remedial activities remain below established health protective thresholds.

Groundwater
The Environmental Monitoring program involves routine groundwater sampling and analysis to evaluate the performance of the groundwater extraction system for the Great Miami Aquifer. The purpose of this program is to ensure that the extraction system continues to be effective in removing contaminants from the aquifer, and to ensure that no further off-site migration of contaminants occurs. Sampling and analysis of groundwater is also conducted in the vicinity of the On-Site Disposal Facility for ongoing assessment of its performance

Surface Water and Sediment
The Environmental Monitoring program includes surface water and sediment in the major drainage areas on site, including Paddy's Run and off-property in the Great Miami River. The project uses this information to evaluate the effect of soil excavation and other remedial activities on surface water quality, and to assess the performance of storm water runoff controls, sediment controls, and wastewater treatment processes at Fernald.

Air
The air monitoring program is comprised of three distinct sampling components:

bullet item Air particulate sampling with analysis for radionuclides
bullet item Radon monitoring
bullet item Direct radiation monitoring

The Environmental Monitoring program includes the collection of data from air particulate, radon and direct radiation monitoring stations to assess the collective effectiveness of sitewide emission controls and to document Fernald's compliance with regulatory limits and DOE standards.

For More Information
A detailed description of Fernald environmental sampling programs and data collected are contained in the Integrated Environmental Monitoring Plan (IEMP). The data collected under the IEMP are currently presented in two reports each year. A thorough evaluation and discussion of each year's environmental data is presented annually in the Site Environmental Report (SER) and its data appendices. The SER will be available in printed form in June of each year. Shortly thereafter, a summary volume of the SER may be accessed through this web site. Beginning in 2002, a mid-year environmental data summary will be issued in early December of each year which includes data from the first six months of the year.

All IEMP documents are available at the Public Environmental Information Center (PEIC). For specific questions about this project Contact Sue Walpole, S. M. Stoller, at 513-648-4026, e-mail: Sue.Walpole@lm.doe.gov.
