Beavercreek High School won
the 2006 fifteenth annual Greater Cincinnati Regional Science Bowl
competition. The team of five students and their coach receive an
all-expense paid trip to the 2006 U.S. Department of Energy's
National Science Bowl this spring in Washington D.C. More than
12,000 high school students from 1,800 schools in 31 states compete
each year. The winning team and two runners-up receive a science
research trip to France and domestic DOE sites, in addition to funds
for their school's science departments. (8157D-16)
2006 Science Bowl
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental
Management Consolidated Business Center sponsored the fifteenth
annual Greater
Cincinnati Regional Science Bowl competition. The winner of
this regional competition will be
going to the 2006 National Science Bowl® in Washington, D.C.
from April 27-May 1.
During the early 1990s, when the site was transitioning its
workforce to a new environmental remediation mission after nearly 40
years of uranium processing operations, Fernald expanded its public
information and outreach programs to educate the community about
cleanup plans and encourage stakeholder participation in the
decision process.
Education
To produce the most competent, skilled workforce in the world and
ensure all citizens understand the basics of science and mathematics,
DOE and Fluor Fernald have partnered with educators to leverage
resources and enhance classroom education through practical
application and hands-on experiences. Fernald sponsors several
enrichment programs for pre-college (K-12) teachers and students to
improve science and mathematics literacy, stimulate interest in
technical fields and help students gain an understanding of the skills
that are expected in the workplace.
Each year, thousands of teachers and students explore science,
technology, ecology and engineering through Fernald’s outreach
programs, including the Greater Cincinnati Regional Science Bowl,
Partnership in Education, and teacher workshops. Fernald volunteers
participate in national and regional events such as Earth Day,
National Engineers Week and Waterfest to share information about the
site’s environmental cleanup work. To encourage interest in advanced
education, Fluor Fernald also awards scholarships to students who plan
to study an environmental, health or safety field.
Community
To give back to the community, hundreds of Fernald employees and their
families donate their time, talents and financial support to a variety
of community activities, such as Habitat for Humanity, an organization
dedicated to helping low-income families buy decent affordable
housing. In the city of Cincinnati, only 38 percent of residents are
homeowners. In an effort to raise that percentage, Fluor Fernald has
partnered with Habitat for Humanity. Since 1996, DOE and Fluor Fernald
volunteers have helped build ten homes for its partner families.
When there is a need, Fernald employees have been quick to respond.
Employees donate school supplies and backpacks to hundreds of students
as and raise thousands of dollars to support annual United Way fund
drives. During the holiday season, employees donate new gifts for kids
and families in need. To make a positive difference in local
neighborhoods, Fluor Fernald provides funding to a variety of other
civic, education, arts and health and human services programs.
