Workers prepared the wetland vegetation area by placing coir (coconut) fabric along the newly formed berms. A native prairie mix was later seeded beneath the coir fabric.

In the Fernald Natural Resource Restoration Plan, DOE agreed to conduct 15 ecological restoration projects to restore natural resources that were damaged by site operations and cleanup activities. The plan outlines DOE’s final land use strategy and identifies institutional controls needed to restore and commit portions of the 1,050 acre site to an undeveloped park, with an emphasis on wildlife habitat.

To effectively integrate natural resource restoration with ongoing cleanup activities, DOE and Fluor Fernald have phased the projects according to the sequence of soil remediation. Twelve of the 15 projects will fulfill DOE’s commitment to restore natural resources on site.  Restoration in undisturbed areas of the site will occur as scheduling and funding permits.
