Southern Waste Unit restoration  (7800D-0118).

In November 2001, Fernald completed cleanup of the Southern Waste Units, which includes the South Field and two flyash piles. The cleanup plan involved characterizing the soil to determine contamination levels, excavating the contaminated portions of the soil, and disposal of the waste in the On-Site Disposal Facility (OSDF).

Following cleanup, Fernald initiated restoration of the area to create additional floodplain with wetland features for Paddys Run Stream and expand the wooded corridor along the stream.  The project involved the configuration of a post-cleanup “restoration grade” that uses excavations made during cleanup to create the expanded floodplain areas along Paddys Run. Workers amended the remaining subsoil with woodchip mulch, stockpiled topsoil, and re-vegetated the upland portion of the project site with native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers. Fernald completed restoration of the Southern Waste Unit area in 2002.
