Scout Night - Food Chains and Food Webs with Night Hike

Join a guided exploration of the Howell Prairie after dark. We’ll begin with an introduction to the prairie ecosystem, including a discussion on food chains and food webs. Next, we’ll head outdoors to listen for coyotes and to observe the night sky. Our adventure will conclude with a hike to the top of the cell to view the entire prairie landscape.

Radiation from natural and man-made sources is all around us all of the time. Radiation is used in modern medicine, energy production, and nuclear weapons. Students will use Geiger counters to find and document natural sources of radiation in a mock scene of the former Weldon Spring Uranium Feed Materials Plant cleanup process.


Public Program – Great Backyard Bird Count

Calling all citizen scientists! Join the Weldon Spring Site and participate in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Everyone is encouraged to stop in anytime during the event to collect vital data about wild birds for the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. We’re also hosting engaging activities and crafts to deepen your understanding of our feathered friends and their ecological importance. This program will prepare you for the official count that occurs February 16 through February 19. This is a great opportunity for new birders and those looking to expand their bird knowledge.


Severe Storm Spotter Training

The Weldon Spring Site and Confluence Chapter of the Missouri Master Naturalists are pleased to host the National Weather Service to present Severe Storm Spotter Training for the public. Starting with a blue sky, individuals are taught the basics of thunderstorm development and structure, including what features to look for in tornado development, and severe weather safety. This training can lead to NWS Storm Spotter certification, if desired. Additional information about the training can be found at https://www.weather.gov/lsx/skywarn.
